What are the first signs of hair loss?

When it comes to balding, the earlier you take action, the more you’ll keep. That’s why it’s important to know the early signs of balding to look out for.

It’s good to remember that hair loss comes as a result of a variety of factors: age, genetics, hormones, stress or scalp conditions.

How do you know when hair falling out is the beginning of balding?

If you notice any of the following signs, it’s best to look at your options as promptly as possible.

Noticing an increase in hair on the shower floor or after combing can be a giveaway that balding has begun. Comparing photographs can also be helpful to determine whether there are any signs of male pattern balding.

Balding occurs gradually, so these signs may be subtle initially. Look out for thinning the following areas:

  • The top of the head: this process can be very gradual, and is the most common type of hair loss.
  • Hairline: look out for the hairline developing into more of an “M” shape, as well as receding back on the head.
  • Temples: look out for thinning around this area as well as the back of the head - this can be harder to notice, so it might be helpful to take photos of the back of your head.

A combination of over-the-counter medication, ensuring the body is well-nourished, and using growth-promoting shampoo can help you keep as much of your hair as possible. If you are concerned about the reasons you may be experiencing hair loss, talk to your doctor.
